« Avec tous les outils à disposition, on oublie trop souvent l’émotion au profit de la perfection. Aujourd’hui même les groupes de garage sonnent propre au regard du son qu’avait un groupe comme les Clash. J’ai peur qu’on ne soit plus assez à l’écoute de la puissance de l’instant. ». C’est en enregistrant lui-même et avec les moyens du bord - comprendre « des logiciels piratés » - les maquettes de son premier groupe indie pop The Dancers, avec qui il jouera jusqu'en 2015, que Corentin Ollivier a découvert sa passion pour le son. Quant à la musique, il en joue depuis ses premiers cours d’accordéon à sept ans et une révélation à l’atelier musique de son collège. « C’est là que j’ai compris que la guitare est quand même plus l’instrument qu’il me fallait connaître pour jouer les disques de Neil Young ou de Pink Floyd que j’aimais. ».

Au début des années 2010, une scène partagée à la Bellevilloise à Paris avec le groupe Concrete Knives va changer son destin. « Ils venaient d’avoir une expérience malheureuse en studio. Ils n’étaient pas arrivés à se faire comprendre et à enregistrer comme ils le souhaitaient. Je leur ai proposé mes services. » C’est avec Concrete Knives, dont il va réaliser deux disques et avec lesquels il jouera aussi, que viendront les premières expériences en studio. « Au-delà du plaisir de faire évoluer le son, j’ai aussi très vite appris la dimension politique de ce métier. Enregistrer un groupe de cinq musiciens et les rendre tous heureux cela demande beaucoup de doigté. ».

D’autres expériences suivront avec Samba de la Muerte, qu’il rejoint à la guitare et dont il coréalise le premier EP et l’album Colors, ou avec la chanteuse Ladylike Lily. Tout en étant toujours musicien pour d’autres comme Lomepal ou Camélia Jordana et en produisant sa propre musique (3 EPs sous le nom de Faroe) Corentin Ollivier a un crédo : « Je veux aider les musiciens à aller au bout d’eux-mêmes. Leur permettre de révéler ce que leur musique a d’unique. Je crois aux ressentis, aux frissons, aux reliefs plus qu’aux plaisirs égoïstes des esthètes du son. »

“With all the tools at our disposal, we too often prioritize perfection over feeling. Today, even garage bands sound clean-cut compared to the sound of a group such as The Clash. I’m worried that we no longer care about the power of the immediate.” When Corentin Ollivier himself used whatever was to hand – think pirate software here – to record demos of his first indie-pop band, The Dancers, a group he was part of until 2015, he discovered his fascination with sound. He has been playing music since his first accordion lessons at the age of seven and a revelation in his school’s music workshop. “That was when I realized the guitar was actually the instrument I needed to learn, to play the Neil Young and Pink Floyd records I loved.”

At the start of the 2010s, he shared the stage at La Bellevilloise in Paris with the band Concrete Knives. It would change his life. “They’d just had a bad experience in the studio. They couldn’t get their ideas across and record the way they wanted. So I offered to help.” He produced two records with Concrete Knives – he would also play with them – and so acquired his first experience of the studio. “Apart from the pleasure of moving the sound forward, I also very soon learned about the tact needed for the job. It takes a lot of diplomacy to record a group of five musicians and keep them all happy.”

Other experiences followed: with Samba de la Muerte – he joined them on guitar and co-produced their first EP and their Colors album – and singer Ladylike Lily. When he works as a musician with other artists, such as Lomepal or Camélia Jordana, or produces his own music (3 EPs as Faroe), Corentin Ollivier has a policy. “I want to help musicians express themselves to the full, let them show what’s unique about their music. I believe in feelings, thrills and effects more than the selfish pleasures of sound esthetes.”
