« Je sais qu’on peut faire bien avec peu. Je ne suis pas du tout dans la surenchère d’équipements. La chanson et l’émotion priment ». Cette vision, il l’a d’abord expérimentée avec son groupe Quadricolor devenu Griefjoy en 2013 dont il était à la fois le chanteur, le pianiste et le co-producteur des disques. « À l’époque, nos morceaux étaient souvent trop riches, depuis j’ai appris à me mettre au service des chansons et à ne pas chercher à les habiller à tout prix au point de masquer leur singularité sous des couches d’arrangements inutiles, bien que parfois rassurants. Il faut savoir aller à l’essentiel. » Un mantra qui a notamment été appliqué lors de l’enregistrement du prochain album de Victor Solf dont Guillaume est producteur et co-compositeur, ou du quatrième album de Camélia Jordana auquel il a participé.
Ce goût pour le dépouillement, lui vient de son instrument de prédilection le piano, qu’il pratique depuis l’âge de quatre ans au conservatoire dont il est sorti avec trois prix, classique, jazz et musique actuelle. « J’ai l’impression que je peux tout raconter avec le piano. Il est devenu un prolongement de mon cerveau et c’est un instrument incroyablement polyvalent». Avec lequel il a d’ailleurs enregistré deux disques solos en 2017 et 2019, s’inscrivant dans la mouvance de musiciens néo-classiques comme Nils Frahm ou Max Richter. Des compositions qui trouvent naturellement leur place quand il s’agit d’illustrer des films de fiction, des séries comme la saison 3 de Calls pour Canal + ou des documentaires à succès comme One breath around the world, dans lequel le champion d’apnée Guillaume Néry fait le tour du monde sous l’eau. Quand il compose pour l’image, Guillaume Ferran aime que la musique raconte ce qu’on ne voit pas à l’écran. Selon lui, il faut que la musique soit capable d’allier les opposés. Voilà qui pourrait d’ailleurs résumer son approche générale du travail.

“I know you can do good things with very little. I’m really not into the equipment race. The priority is the song and its emotion.” He initially took that approach with his group Quadricolor, which became Griefjoy in 2013. He was their singer, pianist and record co-producer. “At the time, our tracks were often too elaborate. Since then, I’ve learnt to focus on the songs and not try to dress them up at any cost, hiding their distinctiveness under layers of arrangements which are pointless, even though they’re sometimes reassuring. You have to be able to get down to the essentials.” A philosophy especially applied during the recording of Victor Solf’s next album, which Guillaume coproduced and co-wrote, and Camélia Jordana’s fourth album, which he worked on.
That taste for minimalism comes from his favorite instrument, the piano, which he played at the conservatoire from age four, winning three prizes for classical, jazz and contemporary music. “I feel I can express anything with the piano. It’s become an extension of my brain and it’s an amazingly multipurpose instrument.” In fact he recorded two solo albums on piano in 2017 and 2019, joining the neoclassical movement of musicians such as Nils Frahm and Max Richter. Those compositions naturally played a part when he soundtracked fictional movies, series such as season 3 of Calls for Canal + TV or successful documentaries including One Breath Around The World, in which freediving champion Guillaume Néry goes around the globe underwater. When he writes for the screen, Guillaume Ferran wants his music to tell a different story to the one we see. He believes that the music must be able to reconcile opposites. In fact, that could actually sum up his general approach to his work.
