Julien Galner fait partie de ces gens qui ont très tôt chopé le virus de la musique. A Tarbes, aux côtés de ses deux grands frères guitaristes. Il s’essaye à la basse puis, a 15 ans passe à la batterie dans son premier groupe qui deviendra après bien des évolutions artistiques « du hardcore torturé au rock psyché et à l’électro pop » Château Marmont.

C’est pendant ces années de mutations musicales qu’il découvre les synthétiseurs dont il devient un collectionneur compulsif et qui peuplent désormais son studio aux côtés de nombreuses machines anciennes.

En travaillant aux albums de Château Marmont et à son projet parallèle Exotica, il réalise que la plupart des ingénieurs avec qui il travaille en studio ne comprennent pas réellement la musique qu’il joue et surtout comment l’enregistrer. C’est à partir de là, qu’il prend les commandes et découvre le métier de producteur. En parallèle, il suit les cours des beaux-arts durant sept ans et se passionne pour les rapports entre l’image et le son.

Se définissant lui-même comme une sorte de « couteau suisse » capable de s’adapter à tout type de musique et d’univers, il est notamment reconnu pour sa capacité à mélanger tradition et modernité. « Mon truc c’est d’être hyper fan de musique vintage, mais de l’enregistrer avec la qualité sonore et la technique d’aujourd’hui. C’est souvent cette hybridation entre l’ancien et le récent qu’on vient chercher chez moi. » A une époque où les disques s’enregistrent de plus en plus souvent à la maison, il estime que son job consiste à accompagner les musiciens au moment où « ils doivent lâcher leur bébé mais n’arrivent pas à se dire qu’il est prêt. Je sais être à leur écoute avec une infinie patience et les rassurer jusqu’au bout. Pour moi, producteur, c’est avant tout un métier de grand frère ». Belle définition.

Julien Galner caught the music bug very early on, when he was growing up in Tarbes, Southwest France, with his two guitarist big brothers. He tried bass and then, when he was 15, graduated to drums with his first group. After a lot of artistic development, they evolved “from tortured hardcore to psychedelic rock and electro-pop”. They were Château Marmont.

During those years of musical evolution, he discovered synthesizers and began to collect them compulsively. Now they and many other vintage devices fill his studio.

Working on Château Marmont’s albums and his parallel project Exotica, he realized that most of the engineers he worked with in the studio did not really understand the music he was playing and above all how to record it. So he took over and learned the producer’s skills. At the same time, he studied fine arts for seven years and grew fascinated with the relationships between images and sound.

Defining himself as a kind of “Swiss-army knife”, able to adapt to any type of music and world, he especially became known for his ability to combine tradition and modernity. “My thing is being a huge fan of vintage music, but recording it with today’s sound quality and techniques. It’s often that fusion of old and new that people want from me.” At a time when records are increasingly being home-recorded, he feels his job is to assist musicians at a time when “they have to let go of their baby, but cannot admit it’s ready. I can listen to them extremely patiently and reassure them right through to the end. For me, producing is mainly being a big brother.” An excellent definition.
