« Je n’intellectualise pas du tout la musique, je suis très instinctif, des harmonies, des mélodies, trois accords à la Pixies et je m’envole. Je suis du genre à ne toujours pas connaître mon solfège, mais quand les poils se dressent sur le bras c’est bon, ça va. ». Tanguy Destable, revendique de fonctionner à l’instinct. « Je recherche ce truc qui adolescent m’a fait avoir des frissons quand j’écoutais au casque Sonic Youth ou Aphex Twin. Je recherche cette évidence. ».

Sous le nom de TEPR, il a son propre projet de musique électronique « dansante et un peu emo », mais il est aussi compositeur, arrangeur ou réalisateur. Ses outils de prédilection sont l’ordinateur et les synthétiseurs tout en jouant aussi de la guitare et du piano. Quand il réalise des albums pour d’autres, il préfère parler de co-réalisation : « Je ne suis pas dans cette vision un peu totalitaire ou l’artiste doit écouter et approuver le réalisateur. C’est un échange. J’aime pouvoir conforter, appuyer l’artiste dans sa vision, l’aider à faire le tri dans sa production et à organiser son album. C’est pour cela que la réalisation ne m’intéresse que si artistiquement je m’y retrouve. J’ai besoin d’entendre des chansons qui me rendent jaloux et qui me donnent envie de faire partie de l’aventure. ». Ensuite, « j’ai beaucoup de patience et je suis très pointilleux sur l’enregistrement des voix, le respect du texte et les fautes de prononciation. J’aime travailler à des lignes vocales parfaites en anglais, comme en français. » Une fois l’album terminé, Tanguy Destable est aussi un directeur musical doué pour monter en show les chansons d’un album et faire que les morceaux se mélangent, se remixent à l’envie sans jamais que les machines plantent.

I don’t intellectualize music at all, I’m very instinctive. Harmonies, tunes, three Pixies-style chords and I take off. I’m not the kind to always remember my rudiments and theory of music, but when I get goose bumps, it’s all good.” Tanguy Destable has no problem admitting he works intuitively. “I look for that thing that gave me the shivers when I listened to Sonic Youth or Aphex Twin on headphones as a teen. I look for that obvious thrill.”

As TEPR, he has his own electronic music projects – “dance and a little emo” – but he also writes, arranges and produces. His favorite tools are computers and synthesizers, even if he also plays guitar and piano. When he produces albums for others, he prefers to refer to the exercise as ‘co-production’. “I don’t have that rather totalitarian idea that the artist has to listen to and endorse the producer. It’s an exchange. I like to be able to assist and support the artist’s vision, help them classify the production and organize their album. That’s why producing only interests me if I’m happy with it artistically. I need to hear songs that make me jealous and make me want to be part of the venture.” And then, “I’m very patient and very particular about vocal recordings and mistakes with lyrics and pronunciation. I like to work on perfect vocal lines in both English and French.” Once the album is finished, Tanguy Destable is also a gifted musical director, planning the show for the album’s songs and making sure they flow and can be remixed at will without the machine ever crashing.
