A l’entendre, il a toujours voulu faire ça. On s’écoute une heure, une deuxième. Il me raconte des anecdotes de studio, ses références musicales et sa manie pour les vieilles machines auxquelles je ne comprends rien. Au-delà de la passion, c’est la conscience qu’il a de son métier qui m’entraine, à la découverte de la face cachée du disque.

Thomas a la tâche d’aider la musique, de combiner les éléments avec justesse pour rendre ce qui sera donné aux oreilles de l’auditeur. Un travail de technique, mais aussi de création qui offre une quantité infinie de combinaisons sonores. Autant de choix pour lui, qui s’exécute avec soin sur chacun de ses projets. Si l’énergie change, la méthode est unique, c’est comme ça que Thomas signe son travail.

Cette liberté créative nécessite pourtant de savoir jouer avec les règles, celles des artistes et producteurs qui dessinent le terrain de jeu dans lequel il évolue : « tout est possible, tant que je n’en sors pas. Sauf quand il faut... ». Derrière le technicien et le créatif averti se cache encore l’accompagnant, qui sait répondre au besoins de la musique en demeurant force de proposition pour se mettre « au service de l’oeuvre », un élément cher à Thomas qui s’attache à la singularité des artistes avec qui il travaille : « quand je suis en studio avec des gens extraordinaires, je n’ai pas envie de les mettre dans un carcan qui les fera sonner comme tout le monde ».

Listening to him, he always wanted to do this. We listen to each other for an hour, a second. He tells me stories from the studio, his musical references and his mania for old machines that I don't understand. Beyond his passion, it is his awareness of his profession that leads me to discover the hidden side of the record.

Thomas has the task of helping the music, of combining the elements with precision to render what will be given to the listener's ears. This is not only a technical task, but also a creative one, offering an infinite number of sound combinations. So many choices for him, who carefully executes each of his projects. If the energy changes, the method is unique, that's how Thomas signs his work.

This creative freedom requires, however, knowing how to play with the rules, those of the artists and producers who design the playground in which he evolves: "everything is possible, as long as I don't get out of it. Except when I have to...". Behind the technician and the creative expert lies the accompanist, who knows how to respond to the needs of the music while remaining a force of proposition to put himself "at the service of the work", an element dear to Thomas who is attached to the singularity of the artists with whom he works: "when I'm in the studio with extraordinary people, I don't want to put them in a straitjacket that will make them sound like everyone else".
